What template option do I use?

We have two on-disc printing templates for our standard replication packages. D100 allows for print that covers just the regular surface of the disc (A). D109 allows for print that covers the regular surface, the mirror band (B), and much of the clear plastic area (C).

When you choose a template you will need to consider how your artwork will interact with the disc.

If you are doing a Vinyl CD, use template VCD-101. The CDR200 template is used for ink jet or thermal printing on blank media only.

Full color art
If you are printing full color it is normal to put a white flood coat down first to give a consistent print surface. If you have a flood coat you can use the D109 as you will not have to worry about the discs surface.

Full coverage art
If you are printing full coverage where there is a flood or solid color over the entire disc you can use the D109 as you will not be exposing any of the discs surface. One note about silk screen inks, depending on the color the inks are more or less opaque. If the color is one of the less opaque mixtures you may see a difference in color as it crosses from the metal to clear parts of the disc.

Knocking out elements to the disc surface
This is a way to add another dimension to your spot color design. The important thing to keep in mind is what area of the disc you are exposing with your knock out. When knock out text or images cross from one surface to another it can be distracting to the design. Either the D100 or D109 templates would be all right for this type of design, however the D100 would protect you from mistakenly knocking out of any surface then the regular disc.

Text or images directly on the disc surface
When you are printing on the surface without use of a flood the D100 is usually the best choice. It will protect you from having your art cross different surfaces that could be distracting from the final product.

D100
116 mm to 46mm) This print area covers the silver area of the disc but does not include the mirror band or plastic center. Use this if you are printing text or halftones on the disc surface without a flood coat. The limited print area will protect you from having your image or text span multiple surfaces that may be distracting to your message.

D109
(116 mm to 24 mm) This is the greatest print area we offer it covers the silver area of the disc, the mirror band and much of the clear area. It is very important to keep in mind the changing surface of the disc when you design using this template. Often this template is used with a flood (base) coat to give a consistent surface. It is almost always the choice when printing full color on disc.
